Dynamic Earth – real-time weather and earthquakes
Dynamic Earth lets you see global weather patterns as they happen, and see where there are earthquakes around the globe in real-time. It downloads global images every hour and stores up to eight weeks of them to create great animations. Seeing weather and earthquakes on the Magic Planet is one of the most popular – and educational activities available.
Land Surface Temperature
Touch the ground and you’ll feel the land surface temperature. Satellites can also measure this temperature from space, and this real-time animation from NOAA’s Visualization Lab allows you to watch the daily average on the Magic Planet. The images are generated by averaging all of the data collected by the NOAA AMSU and DMSP SSM/I microwave sensors from 4 different polar-orbiting satellites over a 24 hour period. Blue areas are cool and orange areas are warm.
Snow and Ice Cover
Watch an animation of real-time global snow and ice coverage on the Magic Planet, updated daily. Produced by NOAA’s visualization lab, this animation combines Infrared and microwave data from multiple satellites including the NOAA’s GOES Imager and POES AVHRR, US Air Force DMSP/SSMI, and EUMETSAT MSG/SEVIRI sensors. Light blue areas indicate sea ice extent, whereas white colors indicate all other areas of the cryosphere (areas covered by ice, snow, glaciers, or permafrost).
This real-time animation, produced by NASA, combines the images from two satellites of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, STEREO, mission along with images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory at the 304A wavelength. You’ll see solar storms, flares and sunspots updated daily (with a five day lag).
Satellites can detect the difference between rock, grassland, and forests because these surfaces emit energy differently back into space. By measuring these differences and observing the patterns of vegetation –or its lack of growth–NOAA scientists can monitor how droughts are changing across the world through time. Yellow areas indicate areas under moderate drought conditions; red indicates areas experiencing extreme drought conditions. This real-time animation is updated weekly.
Total Precipitable Water
This real-time animation from NOAA shown the total amount of moisture in the atmosphere, updated daily. The atmosphere contains an enormous amount of moisture that circulates around the globe. However, not all of it actually condenses into rain, sleet, or snow since the right balance of pressure and temperature are needed to create precipitation. This dataset uses data from the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit, AMSU, which is attached to the NOAA Polar Environmental Orbiting Satellites NOAA 15, NOAA 16, and NOAA 17.
Sea Surface Temperature
The real-time sea surface temperature dataset, updated daily, is provided by the NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research. The interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere is one that scientists are constantly researching, and the temperature of the sea surface is a key factor in those interactions. The SST images are data merged from several different satellites By collecting data from multiple satellites, high resolution, accurate, cloud-free composites can be generated on a daily basis.
Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly
The real-time sea surface temperature anomaly, updated daily, is the difference between the current temperature and the long-term temperature average. Negative temperature differences indicate that the ocean is cooler than average, while positive temperature difference indicate that the ocean is warmer than average. Tracking sea surface anomalies helps scientists quickly identify areas of warming and cooling, which can effect coral reef ecosystems, hurricane development, and the development of El Nino and La Nina.
This real-time animation, updated monthly, uses the NASA Aqua satellite to measure the amount of plankton and sediments that exists in the surface of the world’s oceans. Scientists use plankton for estimating the general health and biomass distributions in the oceans since these are known to play a key role in marine food webs.
Sea Surface Salinity
This real-time animation, updated monthly, maps the distribution of the surface salinity levels on the world’s oceans, giving scientists an unparalleled view of the global ocean circulation processes. Overall, salinity plays a key role in general ocean circulation dynamics, global water cycles (evaporation, precipitation, water vapor, etc.), climate and sea ice extent. The Aquarius Sea Surface Salinity data is produced by NASA. The oceans are shaded according to the observed concentrations of salt on the ocean surface using practical salinity units.
